SHORT HISTORICAL OUTLINE: Its name does not mean that it is originally from the island of Malta, because the "Maltese" adjective comes from the Semitic term " Malat " which means shelter or harbour; this Semitic root is in the whole series of names of maritime places as p. eg in the name of the adriatique island of Meleda, in that of the Sicilian city of Melita and just also in that of the island of Malta. The ancestors of these small dogs lived in harbours or maritime cities of the Central Mediterranean, where they fought the mice and the rats who proliferated in the harbour shops and in the holds of boats. In his nomenclature of the existent dogs at that time Aristote (384-322 A.C.) made room for a breed of small dogs to which he allocates the name of "melitenses female ducks". CRANIAL REGION:

SIZE AND WEIGHT:
