SHORT HISTORICAL OUTLINE: Its name does not mean that it is originally from the island of Malta, because the "Maltese" adjective comes from the Semitic term " Malat " which means shelter or harbour; this Semitic root is in the whole series of names of maritime places as p. eg in the name of the adriatique island of Meleda, in that of the Sicilian city of Melita and just also in that of the island of Malta.
